    A simulation study of video conferencing system over IEEE 802.11n Wireless LAN

    Wireless local area network (WLAN) is the core of the classic wireless communications systems and owns the infrastructure which wide spreads in many regions in the world. IEEE 802.11n is an attractive standard of WLAN and offers a data capacity of the cell. This paper estimates the maximum limits of the IEEE 802.11n standard cell as a term of number of users which are successfully served by the cell in case of video conference application. The results shown that, the cell of 802.11n could serve about 9 users under the service of video conference in case of 20MHz channel bandwidth before congestion occurs while the 40MHz channel could support 18 users

    Background: COVID-19 infection is associated with neurologic and psychiatric morbidity that suggests a direct effect of the virus or secondary effect of an inflammatory process. These neuropsychiatric consequences may increase the likelihood of schizophrenia in the offspring of women who become infected with COVID-19 during their pregnancy. Methods: We performed a directed narrative review of the literature focusing on the proposed pathophysiological processes that lead to schizophrenia and known pathological consequences of COVID-19 infection. Results: Schizophrenia in adult offspring has been associated with maternal infections during pregnancy by a wide range of respiratory and neurotropic pathogens. Spikes in the incidence of schizophrenia approximately 20 years after several influenza pandemics have been documented. There are multiple lines of evidence suggesting that a similar pattern may be seen due to the recent COVID-19 pandemic. These include the nonspecific consequences of acute illness and hyperpyrexia, as well as more specific derangements of brain development related to direct effects of the virus or secondary effects of the inflammatory response on the developing brain. There is the potential to prospectively test this hypothesis by following the offspring of women who are known to have developed COVID-19 during their pregnancy. Conclusion: The COVID-19 pandemic is likely associated with a range of future neuropsychiatric consequences in people whose mothers suffered the infection during their fetal development. It is important to try to follow these offspring to determine the full range of consequences of COVID-19 infection

    Relationship between pulmonary function tests, sputum eosinophilia and total serum IgE levels among asthmatic patients in Duhok, Iraq

    Background: Bronchial asthma is a disease characterized by reversible airway obstruction, airway inflammation; and hyper-responsiveness. The prevalence of asthma is high, and both its prevalence and burden have increased over the last several decades. The study of inflammatory markers has implications for the appropriate management of this disease. Inflammatory markers has implications for the appropriate management of this disease. Objective of the study is to determine the correlation between asthma severity using pulmonary function tests with sputum eosinophilia and total serum IgE levels.Methods: This case-control study was conducted from March 2017 to September 2018 in the respiratory unit of Azadi general teaching hospital. It included 42 asthmatic patients and 18 healthy subjects. They underwent pulmonary function tests and measurement of total serum IgE levels. Induced sputum was done for asthmatic patients.Results: The age of asthmatic patients ranged from 16-70 years (mean 42±19 years). The asthmatic patient’s female: male ratio was 1.8. Mild asthma was the most common severity group (N=18, 43%) followed by moderate asthma (N=14, 33%) then severe asthma (N=10, 24%). Abnormal sputum eosinophilia (≥3%) was detected in 90% of severe asthma (N=9) compared to 36% in moderate asthma (N=5) and 5.6% in mild asthma (N=1). There was significant statistical association between asthma severity and sputum eosinophilia (p=0.00004). The association between asthma severity and total serum IgE levels was highly significant (p<0.0000) with levels of total serum IgE increasing as the severity of asthma increases.Conclusions: Severe asthma is the least common severity group in this study. Both abnormal sputum eosinophilia and total serum IgE levels are associated with the severity of asthma

    EFFECTIVENESS OF OVINE FOLLICULAR FLUID AND EWE AGE ON IN VITRO NUCLEAR MATURATION AND EMBRYO EVOLUTION OF AWASSI EWES

    Two experiments were conducted to study the efficiency of the ovine follicular fluid (OFF) and the age of ewe on in vitro nuclear maturation of Awassi sheep oocytes (Experiment 1) and the subsequent stages of early embryos and their quality (Experiment 2). The OFF has been added to the basic maturation medium (TCM-199) with three different levels (A: 0% (Control group), B:15%, C:25% and D:50%) while the ages of the ewes were determined into two main groups (> 2 and 1-2 year). In the first experiment, across the two age groups, matured oocytes in C solution achieved the highest (p=0.006) rates of metaphase-II (85.70 and 82.35 % respectively). In the second experiment, oocytes belonging to > 2 and 1-2-year ewe age groups (C Solution) achieved the highest (p=0.001) rates  of fertilization (23.17 and 30.73% respectively). Similar trend applies to the cleavage stage, the rates reached 35.14 and 41.27% respectively (p=0.01). No significant differences were noticed at the different stages of cleavage (2-4 cell, morula, and blastocyst). The resulting embryos of B (> 2-year ewe age group) and C solution (1-2-year age group) achieved the highest (p=0.04) rates of Type1 embryos (69.56 and 76.92% respectively). A significant difference was noticed in type2 embryos (p=0.02), embryos of the first and second age groups (Solution D) achieved the highest rates (46.15 and 33.33% respectively). It can be concluded that the adding of 25% OFF to the maturation media led to significant improvement in the rates of maturation, cleavage and type1 embryos of sheep oocytes

    Trends in hospital-based management of acute asthma from a teaching hospital in South Asia.

    The aim of this study is to evaluate the hospital-based management of acute asthma in south Asia and to compare practices over a 10-year period. Adult patients (n = 102) admitted at a teaching hospital with acute asthma were studied. Documentation of precipitating factors, family history and physical signs were inadequate in more than half of patients. Pulse oximetry was documented in 95 (93%) patients, but peak flow monitoring was performed only in 50 (49%) patients. Ten-year trend showed deterioration in history and physical examination skills, under use of peak flow readings, and poor pre-discharge instructions. Some aspects of improved care included frequent use of pulse oximeter, preference of inhaled over systemic bronchodilators and increased use of systemic steroids. Significant deficiencies were identified in hospital-based management of acute asthma. Most aspects of asthma care continued to fall short of asthma guidelines
